Mixing pantheons
Mixing Pantheons. Pagans tend to be nothing if not eclectic, but some think we take our eclectic tendencies a bit too far. What do you think of working with Gods and Goddesses from different pantheons? Can Kwan Yin and Hera get along? Will Odin and Osiris work together? Or should we find a single pantheon of gods and work with them alone?
Here's my theory: I generally speak or write of Goddess and God. If I'm doing spellwork that's focused, I will name the goddess. For example, I might specifically refer to her as Isis or Inanna if I'm working on a fertility spell. If I'm looking for writing inspiration, I might call her Brigid. If I'm doing something more masculine-oriented, I generally refer to God and it's been harder to name him just b/c of like twenty years of just saying "god." But I'm getting more into names of gods now and it's working out well for me.
As for mixing deities, I don't really have a problem with it. The thing is that all their characteristics and names were assigned by humans. And, additionally, they are human characteristics. So the idea of them not getting along is a human one. However there is a part of me that thinks it would be amusing to get Kali and Hera together ;)
I know in the future, I'll have longer PaganSpeak entries but as I only joined the group recently and I wanted to participate right away, I had to crunch the June entry. I could have shared the story of the time I caught myself on fire during a Yule celebration and therefore answered topic #3, but I believe I already blogged that last Yule.
I think I'll probably comb the PaganSpeak archives and write about topics already covered. That'd be fun. When/if I do, I'll put a note in my blog about it and you'll be able to find it here.
