All nekkid and stuff

So I heard about Fiona Horne being in the October Playboy (Halloween, witch, get it?) and so I told Hawk, "I want to get a Playboy becau..."

"Okay!"

So today we got it and I checked her out first thing. The piece is called "Spellbound." Her interview is brief, briefer than I'd have liked, but it's about her being a witch and a little of what that means (i.e.: spirituality, not twinkling your nose and having dinner appear). This accompanies a few photos. Her hair is crimped. Ew.

The second set of two pages is small photos and a pull quote about how being nude contributes to her spirituality. I was a little disappointed in the presentation b/c it sounds like Wicca is an excuse (1) to be naked and (2) to see naked people. If you read it in a more spiritual, less sexual way, what she says is that going skyclad brings her in closer touch with nature. The pp is finished with something like "I can't wait to get out of my gear!" Well I enjoy taking my bra off at the end of the day. Does that count? ;)

The second set of pages is a spread (heh) that goes to about mid-thigh. She's lying in the grass. It's very soft focus and very pretty. Except for that crimped hair.

So that was my big Mabon post. I'd hoped to do something deep and reflective, maybe talking about the fact that I initiated five years ago Mabon but since I didn't get to so much as light a candle today, it'll have to wait.

BTW: You can see the crimped hair in that link. There are no boobies involved.

I gotta believe that, to be taken seriously, publicity like this does NOT help our cause, unless you're of the mind that any publicity is good publicity.

None of the serious witches or pagans I know are like this. Maybe I'm traveling in the wrong crowds. ;)

Her books have good info and she really "normalized" Wicca from what I saw on "Mad Mad House." It was so incredible for me to actually see someone practice my religion on TV. I'd never seen anyone perform rituals or spellwork before. I also got some good ideas and affirmations from it and from her book "Witch."

The only problem I had w/ the pictoral was the perpetuation that nudity goes hand-in-hand with ritual (based on her comments, not the pictorial in and of itself) and some might extract that sex is part of ritual as well. I know that there are practioners and covens who celebrate that way (esp at Beltane) but I don't go much for the idea that you join up with a coven to swing.

I'd rather listen to Fiona Horne that Silver Ravenwolf any day ;)
